A Fellow and Honorary Life Member, he was president from 1976 until 1978, then aged just 36. He was responsible for establishing formal membership standards, and the accreditation of computing and ICT courses over a 15-year period.
Born in Napier, NZ, he took his degree at Victoria University before moving to Adelaide in 1961 to pursue a PhD in mathematics and computing. There he met his wife Margaret, 47 years to the day before he died.
After both completed their studies, they spent seven years in the US and NZ where Bob developed research and teaching interests in computer science, while she taught maths, physics and computing.
Returning to Adelaide to manage the establishment of ICL's software development centre in 1970, he returned to academia as Head of Computer Studies at the SA Institute of Technology for 18 years.
He became Dean of Applied Sciences and Technology at the new University of SA. Appointed Emeritus Professor on his retirement in 1997 and inducted into the Pearcey Hall of Fame in 2002, he worked hard on his fitness for gold-medal standard orienteering in Australia and overseas.
He was active in Rotary, had governance over a district which stretched from Adelaide to southwester Queensland. He is survived by Margaret, children Michelle, Roger and Bruce - who also took his PhD in mathematics at his father's alma mater, making a rare double.
