Introducing the new ACS M

The new committee comprises the national president, immediate past president, three vice presidents, the treasurer, four representatives from the national congress plus the chief executive officer.

National President - Kumar Parakala is Global Chief Operating Officer of KPMG's Information Risk Management (IRM) Practice and has over 16 years experience in ICT spanning senior management roles in healthcare, professional services, manufacturing and the public sector. He was a senior manager at the University of Sydney with overall responsibility for online service strategy and delivery and has held various executive roles within the Queensland Government including CIO, Project Director and Business Improvement Manager, receiving the Queensland Government's Leadership Excellence Award in 2000. Kumar also served as the member of the QLD Government CIO Council. He was invited by the NSW Premier to take part in a government-sponsored trade mission to India in November 2004 to promote the state's ICT sector, and currently sits on various panels, committees and boards relating to ICT strategy, awards, higher education and industry development. Kumar is a qualified lead assessor and internal auditor, and a certified Master Project Director (MPD). He is a member of the Information Systems Audit Control Association and The Australian Institute of Project Management.

Immediate Past President - Philip Argy is an experienced mediator and arbitrator who established his own high-tech dispute resolution and negotiation practice in January 2008 after nearly 32 years with Mallesons Stephen Jaques. Philip also specialises in intellectual property, science, technology and competition law. He has successfully arbitrated/mediated over 100 scientific and technological disputes and is on the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) panel of neutrals for international arbitrations and mediations. He was a member of the Federal Attorney-General's Electronic Commerce Expert Group and a member of the auDA Names Panels that recommended the domain name eligibility and allocation policies for the .au space. He is national Chairman of the eCommerce Committee of the Law Council of Australia and a past president and founding member of the NSW Society for Computers & the Law.

Vice President - Dr Bob Cross is a principal of Whiteknight Business Consulting, which provides consulting and facilitation in effective decision-making, complex problem-solving, strategic planning and more. Dr. Cross previously worked as International Director for the School of Computer and Information Science at Edith Cowan University and as State Manager of both CSC Australia and Datec. An ACS Fellow and Honorary Life Member, he served as Chair of the WA Branch, during which time he was instrumental in driving a more member-focused and financially-viable approach, later serving as National Treasurer from 2005-2007. He is currently a committee member of the ACS Foundation in WA and a member of the ACS Academic Board. Dr Cross also spent three years as a member of the WA ICT Industry Development Forum, an invitation-only advisory panel for the WA Minister for Science and Technology.

Vice President - Mark Lloyd is Project Director for the Queensland Department of Public Works (DPW). He held previous roles as DPW's and Premier's Department's Chief Information Officer and other executive roles in government. As Chairman of the ACS QLD Branch in 2006, Mark initiated and developed Technologists in the Public Interest, a national initiative promoting debate within the ICT community about establishing identity, competency, integrity and governance standards for ICT workers, to mitigate risk. Mark is also a member of Griffith University's ICT Industry Advisory Board and Chairman of the International Organising Committee, World Computer Congress, which takes place in 2010 in Brisbane, Australia.

Vice President - Stephen Kowal is the Chief Information Officer and Director of Business Excellence, for CSC Australia. Stephen has held prior roles as CIO of BHP Billiton - Base Metals based in South America and CIO of WMC and BHP Billiton IT Integration Lead, in which he led the technical integration of WMC into BHP Billiton as part of the $9.2b acquisition. Earlier in his career, he held IT and commercial roles within Cable and Wireless, Boral and the Department of Defence. In addition to his CSC and ACS roles, he is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FFIN) and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD).

Treasurer - Bruce Kruttschnitt is a self-employed project manager, based in Canberra, who has spent over 25 years working in ICT. He has extensive experience in managing public sector ICT projects, most recently with the National Water Commission, Land and Water Australia, Defence and the ATO. He has held senior management roles within both public and private sector organisations, including serving as Executive Officer to the Secretary of the Department of Parliamentary Services, COO of ComSuper, General Manager of eNTITy1 Limited and Director of Information Services for the NT Department of Chief Minister & Department of Legislative Assembly. A former chairperson of both the Northern Territory and Canberra Branches, Bruce is a Fellow of the ACS and a member of Australian Institute of Project Management.

National Congressional Representatives (NCR)

NCR - Anastasia Govan operates inforg, a Darwin-based consulting firm providing information solutions to the NT. With 12 years' experience in information management, she is a consulting partner with Whitehorse Strategic Group and has held various roles with the NT Department of Health & Community Services, Power and Water Corporation, Charles Darwin University and the NT Library and Information Service. Ana was awarded National Young Professional of the Year 2006 by Professions Australia, was a finalist in the 2005 NT AIM Young Manager of the Year awards and was named by BRW magazine as one of the leading female IT executives in Australia in July 2006. She chairs the ACS NT Branch and holds national board positions with the Records Management Association of Australia, NT IT Industry Development Group and NT IT Cadets.

NCR - Anthony Wong leads the ICT practice at Aequitas Attorneys and is Chairman of ACS NSW. He has been an IT professional for over 20 years and has held senior management roles in multinationals and government. As a qualified lawyer, accredited IT Disputes Mediator and an ex-CIO, he brings his unique experiences and skills to assist organisations on information and technology strategies, eCommerce, IT governance and compliance, privacy, technology licensing and intellectual property matters. He holds bachelor degrees in Computer Science and Law from Monash University and a Master of Laws in Technology from UNSW. He was founding president of the NZ Society for Computers and Law and is a member of the International Technology Law Association and the NSW Law Society.

NCR - Ian Dennis is Executive Director of the Centre for Innovative Industry Economic Research Inc and Chairman of Whitehorse Strategic Group Limited, a consulting company specialising in IT and innovative industry policy and strategy. He has served the ICT industry for 40 years in his roles as a software developer, software company and consulting company director, and through his various honorary positions within the AIIA, ACS, Pearcey Foundation and other bodies. He is the lead author of a major Federal Government review of the Australian Software Industry, and of many other analytical studies of Australian ICT issues and topics. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of both the Australian Institute of Management and the ACS.

NCR - Nick Tate is Director of Information Technology Services (ITS) at the University of Queensland and Director of AusCERT, (Australian Computer Emergency Response Team), which is based at the university. Educated in the UK, he began his career as a weapons systems engineer with Ferranti, working in naval contracts before moving into the finance sector. After emigrating to Australia in 1997, he worked as IT Infrastructure Director at Macquarie Bank with responsibility for the bank's global infrastructure. He has over 33 years in IT, including 20 years in investment banking, eight in the university sector, three years in defence and two in real-time systems. Nick is Chair of the ACS Queensland Branch and serves on the ICT Industry Working Group, acting as a liaison between the ICT Industry and the Queensland Government.
