Attracting students into ICT courses

Sitting recently at a course advice desk during my university’s open day, I was struck by the vocational focus of the questions from the prospective university students. It had been three years since my previous stint of course advice. The emphasis of student questions was whether jobs would be available in ICT when they graduated.

Over the past month, many of you will have read obituaries to the late Dr Trevor Pearcey, the man credited with designing and building Australia's first computer. Dr Pearcey's many significant contributions to the Australian IT industry cannot be overstated: he was the architect of CSIR Mark 1, the first stored program computer in Australia and only the fourth in the world; he designed Australia's first computer network, CSIRONET; he predicted the shift to digital communications; and he anticipated the development of the Internet and its potential for online education.
